Japanese (Advanced) IA <Reading>

授業の内容

The purpose of this class is to develop the applied skills in reading, through texts written at upper-intermediate level grammar and vocabulary. In particular, will acquire the ability to read the necessary information quickly and accurately according to the level of difficulty and purpose of the text.

到達目標

・Students will be able to quickly scan important information in sentences written in Japanese.
・Students will be able to quickly skim the main idea of a sentence in Japanese.

授業の方法

This course consists of lectures and speed reading exercises. In the first half of the course, students will read actual sentences written in Japanese and practice scanning, skimming, etc. In the second half of the course, students will use the reading techniques practiced in the first half to read and digest a novel. At the end of the course, each student will present the content of the novel they have read. Through pair and group work, students are required to communicate and discuss the content of their readings with others.
All lectures and learning activities will be conducted in Japanese.

This course is taught in the form of exercises, and is held on campus. If, due to emergency, the course must be switched to remote teaching, we will us Zoom.

Students will receive comment sheet describing what they did well on the assignment and what they need to improve on.

Instructions will be given in the class on preparation for reading texts and for presentations.

Others: class activity 30 %, Assignment 50%
Note: You cannot receive credit for a course if you are absent more than 4 times. Please note that arriving more than 30 minutes late to a class or leaving a class when there are 30 minutes or more of the class period left will count as an absence. In addition, arriving to class less than 30 minutes late 3 times will count as 1 absence. Similarly leaving class early 3 times (when there are less than 30 minutes of the class left) will count as an absence.
