Japanese Cinema- Cultural Classics- Filming Lafcadio Hearn and Edogawa Rampo

Students will view, analyze, and discuss Japanese films in English.
Our focus in this course will be films that are based on the literary work of writers Yakumo Koizumi (Lafcadio Hearn) and Edogawa Rampo (Taro Hirai). We will watch, discuss, and write about the works selected for the 1965 Kobayashi film Kwaidan, and the short stories and novella which led to Fukasaku’s 1968 film Black Lizard.

The primary goal of this class is to explore and be able to discuss Japanese films.

This class encourages discussion on the part of the students. Students must engage actively in discussions.
This class also has a presentation/media component. That means that students are expected to present and or produce a media assignment.
This course will be held in assigned classroom. If COVID becomes worse again, it will be held remotely using ZOOM. ZOOM session numbers may be found on class WebClass page.
