This class will explore the historical and cultural development of manga, which has now become a worldwide phenomenon epitomizing the powerful influence of Japanese popular culture. In it, in addition to conducting an analytical breakdown of manga as a media format, we will discuss the sociocultural and economic factors that surround it, through which we can gain a deeper understanding of the methods of consumption within Japan overall.

The course is designed to serve as a way for students not only to learn about the topic itself, but also to exchange opinions with each other on the topic, formulating a more meaningful exchange of ideas, since every participant has a different background. Rather than a one-directional approach, the lectures are structured loosely to allow for rich multilateral discussions on a variety of topics and thus each student can become a contributor to a fresh perspective for the rest of the class. This will help to develop analytical and critical skills, differentiating subjective and objective statements, and thus gain a more holistic yet detailed outlook on the topics at hand.

The course requires an advanced level of command of the English language in order to participate in the discussions. The weekly lectures will focus on one main topic but will be dependent on interaction with the participants in order to cultivate an active environment for exchange of opinions and theories.

Students will be graded according to their participation in class discussions and on their performance in the written assignments.
