Introduction to Bilingualism

授業の内容

This course will introduce students to issues surrounding bilingualism and multilingualism. Topics will include the definition of bilingualism, different types of bilingual people, attitudes toward bilingualism and how children become bilingual. This course is aimed at international students as well as Japanese students who have studied abroad or who want to study abroad in the future. The classes will be taught in English and the required textbook for the course is written in English. Students will be asked to actively participate in the classes and give their opinions and ideas about the topics covered each week. Students will have to read a chapter or part of a chapter in the textbook to prepare for each class.

到達目標

The purpose of this course is to deepen students' understanding of how people acquire and learn more than one language and the implications of being able to use more than one language. By the end of the course, students should have a basic understanding of how bilingualism is defined and be able to explain some of the issues surrounding bilingualism.

授業の方法

In preparation for each class, students will be required to read an extract from the textbook as homework. All classes will include opportunities for students to discuss and share information with each other. Active participation in class is encouraged. At the end of the semester students will give a presentation about one of the topics covered in the course.

授業の計画の補足

Students will be expected to read an extract from the textbook in preparation for each class. Students will also have to prepare a final presentation at the end of the semester.

課題に対するフィードバックの方法

The professor will provide oral feedback to students during the class discussions. In addition, written feedback on the students' final presentations will be provided.

授業時間外の学修(予習・復習等)

Students will be expected to read the given textbook extracts each week in preparation for the class. Students are also expected to review content outside of class. In addition, students will have to prepare a final presentation at the end of the course.

 

1回の授業につき予習・復習あわせて最低4時間の学修が必要となります。
「授業時間外の学修(予習・復習等)」に明記されている想定学修時間の合計が4時間を上回っている場合は、その学修時間を必要とします。
