Rituals, Symbols, Behaviors, and Material Culture

【Course content】
What does it mean to be Japanese? Are there behaviors and ideas that suggest answers? By extension, what comprises, if anything, “Japaneseness,” and, if the answer is marked by multiplicity and even contradiction, then what may we conclude about what it means to be Japanese?
In this course, we will focus on these questions through the lens of anthropology. We will read and discuss several works on Japanese culture by prominent anthropologists and other thinkers.
First, to acquire foundational knowledge of anthropology as an academic discipline – its foci, methods, and theories - we will read Thomas Eriksen’s introduction to the discipline, What is Anthropology? With this foundation we will move to Japanese culture. In particular, we will focus primarily on material culture, ritual and behavior, and symbols in modern Japan. Specifically we will examine Brian McVeigh’s Wearing Ideology and Joy Hendry’s Wrapping Culture.
The books will inspire us to consider how wearing uniforms and other clothing attire and wrapping objects are powerful acts of Japanese identity that are associated with conformity, resistance, the ambivalence of cuteness, politeness, and conflicting discourses.
When time allows, we will also turn to Claude Levi-Strauss’s book, The Other Face of the Moon and Savage Mind. The famed French anthropologist understood that to know deeply one’s own culture, one must know other cultures. The Other Face of the Moon is his attempt to understand Japanese culture, and through the lens of Japan and the Japanese, to reverse the lens and look at one’s own culture as well.
Through the example of Levi-Strauss and other anthropologists who will be under our consideration, perhaps part of the answer to the course’s basic question - what does it mean to be Japanese - will be that to know oneself as Japanese is to know others. One time encounters with “others” (the anthropologists that you will get to know through our readings, international friends, or even strangers and tourists you happen to meet and assist at a train station) might not only influence you on what it means to be Japanese but also what it means to be human.

日本に関するイントロダクションレベルの人類学です。日本人とは何か、そして人間とは何かを人類学の視点から探求します。学期を通して３冊の本を精読します。毎回割り当てられた章を読んでから出席するようにしてください。

1冊目の『人類学とは何か』では人類学の基本的考え方を学びます。人類学におけるフィールドワーク（野外調査）と参与観察 (participant observation) 、人間のさまざまな生や死、儀式、贈与交換など主要概念に親しみます。

２冊目と３冊目は、フィールドワークの産物の研究書です。一つは Wearing Ideology で、服飾文化について論じられた内容です。日本に長く住んだ人類学者である著者 Brian McVeigh は、学生や社会人の制服について、着ているものと人の一生との関係、’カワイイ’文化の意味などを考察しています。何を着たり身につけるのかは、暖をとるという機能的理由だけでなく、文化的意味を内包しているというものです。もう一つはWrapping Cultures で、著者 Joy Hendry によると日本文化は包まれている、贈り物だけでなく、敬語も’包まれた’言葉である、また社会で権威や力のあるメッセージもしばしば’包まれた’形で発信されるなど独特の視点から日本社会を分析しています。

上記に加え、適宜その時々のニュースを人類学的に解釈したり日本論でよく登場する文化テーマのミニレクチャーを聴いていただきます。

人類学の魅力の一つは、世界の多様な人間のあり方を見ることにより人間に関する視野を広げることにあると考えます。たった一度の文化的 “他者” との出会いが、それまでの人間についての考え方を変えることがあるかもしれません。このクラスを通じ、個々の皆さんの人間観や世界観がより一層豊かなものになるよう願っています。

【Goal】
You will gain foundational knowledge of anthropology and the anthropology of Japan. You will also expand your worldview by exposing yourself to diverse values in and outside of Japan. The larger goal of the course is to acquire the ability to examine cultural and social issues - through the lens of Japan - from cross-cultural perspective. In addition, the course will help improve your ability to express yourself by utilizing both English and Japanese.

人類学の主要概念を身につけ、人類学的な視点から様々な事象を考察する力が養われます。現代のニュースや社会問題も人類学的な視点から眺めることは意義があると考えます。同時に、言語面においては日英両言語でより積極的に自分の意見を表現する力をつけることが出来るようになるでしょう。

【Method】
Each session consists of a mini-lecture by your instructor, an oral presentation of an assigned chapter by a student, and a discussion based on the presentation. Since this is run as seminar style, discussion and presentation are the centerpieces of our sessions. Each student is expected to read the material carefully and prepare in advance to present his/her ideas to the class. All students are expected to participate in the discussion. This is a bilingual class, so it is important for everyone to make the effort to speak as plainly and openly as possible, limiting slang and colloquialisms as much as possible. Make every effort to ensure your fellow students can understand what you are trying to communicate. The course content may be a little flexible depending upon the number/ratio of international students and Japanese students.

対面授業を予定しています。毎回、講師によるミニレクチャーと、３冊の本についてのディスカッションが中心となります。ご自分の意見を発言するために、あらかじめ決められた範囲を読み授業にのぞんでください。『人類学とは何か』は日英の両言語で読むことが可能です。Wearing Ideology と Wrapping Cutures は英語版のみですが、ディスカッションポイントを記したプリント（ハンドアウト）などをお配りするなど読みやすさを工夫する予定です。

【Course schedule (tentative)】
A course schedule will be distributed and explained at the first session of fall semester. Be sure to attend the first class where a detailed course schedule and important information will be provided.

Each session comprises the following structure.

1.Mini introductory lecture on anthropology and the anthropology of Japan.
2.Oral presentation of assigned readings and discussion by all the members of class. Each presenting student is expected to read the material critically and sympathetically, orally summarize its main points, and express ideas/opinions about the author's argument. After the presentation, everyone is expected to participate in discussion. When you read and discuss, please avoid automatic and simple agreement or disagreement. Instead, examine the issues from various angles and perspectives. Exchanging diverse ideas/opinions is highly appreciated. Consider the following questions when you engage in discussion. Which aspects of the author's work seem to be most interesting? How is his/her discussion legitimate/appropriate or rather irrelevant/inappropriate and why? Which aspects of society or people's behaviors have changed little or dramatically since the time of the author and his/her work? Which aspects of the author's arguments still seem relevant or have even, perhaps, become more persistent in Japanese society today? Which parts of cultural discussions may be considered uniquely Japanese or may be more commonly observed as universal behavior of human beings?

Through the course, deepening your understanding as a part of Japanese culture and expanding your worldview are the ultimate goal of this class. Since the centerpiece of each session will be devoted for individual presentation and group discussion, this section will consume much of each class' meeting time.

３冊の本に関しては決められた範囲を読んでから授業にのぞみましょう。日頃から現代のニュースや事柄を人類学的な視点から眺めてみるようにしましょう。

1回の授業につき予習・復習あわせて最低4時間の学修が必要となります。
「授業時間外の学修（予習・復習等）」に明記されている想定学修時間の合計が4時間を上回っている場合は、その学修時間を必要とします。

【Grading】
Excellent record of class participation is essential. A final paper should be written based upon your ideas about Japanese culture. Integrating what you have learned in class, you may choose any topic. Suggestions will be discussed in class.

授業での積極的参加が大事です。学期末の記述試験はありませんが、文化についての短いエッセイの提出を課すことといたします。

【Primary textbooks】
３冊の本と学習の進め方などについて初回のクラスで説明しますので、必ず出席しましょう。(Details of the textbooks will be explained at the first session.) 毎回の資料や短いプリント（ハンドアウト）は教室で配布します。必読の本の章など長めの教材は、Google Drive を通じてWebClassにアップロードする予定ですが、状況によっては紙媒体でお配りします。いずれの教材もこちらでご用意します。

Other references will be introduced when necessary.

【Prerequisite】
Ability to communicate in both English and Japanese at a fair level.
Since this is not a pure language class, when communicating with your fellow classmates, emphasis should be on expressing your ideas/ opinions rather than fulfilling linguistic and grammatical accuracy. Commitment and positive participation are crucial. Please be sure to attend the first meeting.

学部や学年専攻を問わず、文化や人類学に興味のある方を歓迎します。いろいろな学部や専攻、バックグラウンドを持つ学生が一つの教室で学ぶのは、寧ろ海外の授業形態に近いものです。海外経験や予定のある方は勿論ですが、今すぐに予定がない方でも全く構いません。授業は基本的に英語で行いますが、高学年になって英語の授業が少なくなり英語に触れていたい、英語力をキープするために聞き取りだけでもしてみたいという方も歓迎です。ご自分の意見を英語と日本語を駆使して表現する力をつけてくださればと思います。海外からの学生さんの数は未知数ですが、有意義なクラスとなるよう最善を尽くします。自文化と異文化への理解を広げ、楽しく充実したクラスを一緒に作っていきましょう。
