Folklore Studies of Japan: its Forming Days

授業の内容

Outline of the formation of Japanese Folklore in the early twentieth century through the introductory lectures and discussions on two eminent founders, ie: Minakata Kumagusu and Yanagita Kunio. Following the preliminary lectures on these two pioneers of the Folkloristic studies on Japan and the outline of Japanese cultural history in general, the participants will join a series of text-analytic sessions of their writings and related contemporary texts, including writings by the Japanologists of those days.
The texts discussed in the class will be bilingual, so that the participants would get familiar with written Japanese through this course. While the course will be conducted mainly in English for international students, Japanese would occasionally be used for the convenience of Japanese students.

Through joining the course, participants would be expected to:
1) be more familiar with traditional aspects of Japanese culture, in addition to those which are eminent in today's global cultural context.
2) get a better understanding of the outline of Japanese Folklore
3) be more familiar with various kinds of Japanese texts, ie: classical academic style used in early twentieth century as well as modern colloquial one.

Lectures (documentation and explanation based on the handouts) in addition to the occasional presentations and discussions by the participants.
Themes and materials would be changed flexibly according to the needs of the participants.

Keen academic interests in the intellectual history of modern Japan are prerequisite.
Reading skills of pre-modern Japanese texts are preferable, though not mandatory.
