授業の内容

This course examines the unique landscape of Japanese media, with a particular focus on news media and journalism in the modern era. As 2025 promises to be a pivotal year, we will analyze current events to illustrate the distinct roles and characteristics of news media in Japanese society. The curriculum bridges contemporary affairs with historical perspectives to provide a deep understanding of the field.

About the Instructor:
The instructor is a staff writer for a major Japanese newspaper with extensive experience covering Japanese politics and international affairs, including assignments at the United Nations in New York. Drawing on his background in corporate planning and as a former board member of local broadcasters, he offers the perspective of industry insiders regarding the strategies formulated to cope with drastic changes in the global media ecosystem.

到達目標

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the primary issues, characteristics, and industrial structure of the Japanese news media. This knowledge will provide a practical foundation for living, studying, and conducting research in Japan.

Active participation is expected, particularly during in-class discussions.
The course will feature guest speakers from diverse sectors of the Japanese media landscape, including traditional and digital media, advertising agencies, and publishing houses.

Preparation and Review:
The instructor places a high value on in-class discussion. At the end of each class, topics for the next session will be announced; students are expected to research and reflect on these subjects beforehand.
