Marriage and Family Mores in Contemporary Japan

An increasing number of young people in Japan are delaying marriage or not marrying at all, a trend that carries profound implications for society. These changes are reflected not only in personal relationships and family values but also in longer-term population patterns such as declining birth rates. This course examines these developments in depth, offering a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Japanese society.

This course deepens students’ understanding of Japanese history, culture, and society through an examination of marriage and family institutions. By analyzing their historical foundations, contemporary forms, and ongoing transformations, students gain insight into the fundamental social structures shaping Japan today.

This course combines lectures with interactive activities and assignments, including discussions, student presentations, weekly reaction notes, reading assignments, and a final paper.

Feedback on assignments will be provided in the next class.

Students are expected to read the assigned handouts and submit weekly reaction notes.

1回の授業につき予習・復習あわせて最低4時間の学修が必要となります。
「授業時間外の学修（予習・復習等）」に明記されている想定学修時間の合計が4時間を上回っている場合は、その学修時間を必要とします。

Class Participation and Weekly Reaction Note: 60%
Presentation and Final Paper: 40%
