副題

Discovery of Japan: Precursory attempts for Japanese Folklore Studies both from inside and outside

授業の内容

Comparative analysis of folklore documents of Japan is the main purpose of the course. Various aspects of traditional Japanese culture will be discussed through accounts by several foreign observers who visited Japan in early Modern period. Candidates for the class include: Algernon Midford, Basil Hall Chamberlain, Isabella Bird, Lafcadio Hearn, and others, in addition to the English versions of some folklore documents by Japanese observers.
The texts discussed in the class will be bilingual, so that the participants would get familiar with written Japanese through this course. While the course will be conducted mainly in English for international students, Japanese would occasionally be used for the convenience of Japanese students.

到達目標

Through joining the course, participants would be expected to:
1) be more familiar with traditional aspects of Japanese culture, in addition to those which are eminent in today's global cultural context.
2) get a better understanding of the outline of Japanese Folklore
3) be more familiar with various kinds of Japanese texts, ie: classical academic style used in early twentieth century as well as modern colloquial one.

授業の方法

Lectures (documentation and explanation based on the handouts) in addition to the occasional presentations and discussions by the participants.
Themes and materials would be changed flexibly according to the needs of the participants.
